What is your approach to design?
I list all requirements in the design brief before I start on the conceptual phase and think laterally! I’m not afraid to take a radical approach, but always verify any new ideas. I’m also happy to accept practical criticism and praise - then fine tune the design.
What are your three favourite designed products?
The Avro Vulcan. The beautiful delta wing shape is graceful, looks and sounds intimidating, and was designed by engineers with slide rules and drawing boards.
The Turbojet. Contains one rotating mass with no reciprocating parts and has revolutionsed aviation/air travel.
Any component designed by Colin Chapman, a master at making one part do several tasks.
What interests you?
The history of aviation and motor sport, building RC helicopters and touring the Outer Hebrides.
What product could you not live without?
My iPhone6 – I struggle to think how I coped without it!
