Graham has worked in mechanical and product design for over 30 years. In that time he has worked for large multi-nationals as well as product design consultancies. Products he has worked on range from complex electromechanical devices such as paper handling machines through consumer electronic devices such as central heating controllers with garden tools, vacuum cleaners, playground equipment, animal husbandry sensors and many other products thrown in. He has been involved in the development and use of three dimensional CAD and rapid prototyping almost from its beginnings and has recently begun to develop his finite element analysis skills. In his role at i4 he particularly enjoys working with and mentoring the less experience members of the team.
What is your approach to design?
Listen to the customer, function is king and keep it simple.
What are your three favourite designed products?
Trangia camping stove: simple and reliable. I have owned the same on for over 20 years and it has never let me down. Every time I use it I am impressed by its functionality and simplicity.
The double diamond bicycle frame: It has stood the test of time, in over 100 hundred years no one has manage to significantly improve upon it. When produced using small diameter quality steel tubing it can look like a piece of art.
Moto Guzzi Le Mans Mk 1 motorcycle: still captures the essence of what a sporting road motorcycle should be 40 years after its initial release.
What interests you?
Riding anything with 2 wheels motorbikes, mountain bikes and road bicycles. Society and current affairs, I have a BSc Hons in Sociology and Social Policy. Getting into the outdoors hill walking, camping…just being out there!
What product could you not live without?
Food, water and air.
